Railway Distance Calculator
The Rail Distance Calculator enables the calculation of rail distances between locations serviced by Spoornet as part of its business. Regardless of location, whether it be Dar-es-Salaam in Tanzania or a remote area in South Africa, the calculator could assist you in your business to explore the central and southern parts of the African continent.
Please note that distances provided are only for rail distances. These distances are provided according to Spoornet business routes and may not necessarily follow any national road route or represent the shortest geographical distance between two locations.
Using the calculator
There are two ways of specifying the origin and destination locations:
- By searching for locations based on names.
- By entering a Spoornet location number directly.
Using Spoornet Location Numbers
This option is used by Spoornet employees or customers who are familiar with Spoornet location numbers.
Enter the numbers of the origin and destination locations in the section titled Calculate Distance and select the Calculate button, as shown below.
Using Location Names
Users who are not familiar with Spoornet location numbers, can use the name of locations to calculate a distance, by following these steps:
Type the first three letters of the origin and destination locations in the section titled Find locations and click on the Search button.
Select the correct locations from those found in the next section and click on the Select button.
- Click the Calculate button to calculate the distance.
Calculation Results
The calculation results are displayed in two parts:
- A summary of all the legs included in the distance.
- Results for all legs included in the total distance.
Note that Spoornet may not operate in a particular area and that we therefore cannot provide rail distances in all areas.
New Calculation
Use the Reset button to clear the current results and to start again with a new calculation.
