17 March 2009  Sishen-Saldanha Corridor records

Transnet’s growth plan for its Iron Ore export operations has stepped up a notch with record performance during the past weeks. The Sishen-Saldanha Corridor achieved a new weekly throughput record of 919,000 tons of iron ore transported between the Northern Cape and the Port of Saldanha.

17 March 2009  Freight Rail Sets New Record with Coal to Maputo

In a bid to deal with the spate of railway level crossing accidents, Transnet Freight Rail will once again embark on a campaign to warn motorists as well as pedestrians on the dangers of not observing safety precautions when approaching or crossing railway lines.

Though aimed to have a national impact, the campaign, which starts on Monday, 11 May 2009, will focus mainly on the major level crossings around the Rustenburg/Brits area. The area has in the past proved to be vulnerable to accidents.

17 March 2009  Freight Rail Sets New Record with Coal to Maputo

Transnet Freight Rail achieved an all time record of 30 coal trains to TCM (Mozambique Railways and Harbours) last week. This equates to some 50 000 tons railed in one week as opposed to an average 25 000 tons per week.

Fuzile Magwa, Freight Rail’s Regional Operating Executive for the Eastern Region, attributed the success to the stakeholder collaboration initiative between Freight Rail, Grinrod and CFM/TCM railways. “This is indeed a remarkable achievement and it is an encouraging response to the present global economic downturn which poses a great challenge to our business”, said Magwa.

10 February 2009  TFR & UNIONS agree

Transnet Freight Rail and its recognised trade unions SATAWU and UTATU have jointly agreed on implementing a number of measures to manage costs. This comes as a result of the current economic global downturn, which has seen a number of companies introducing cost saving measures to manage the situation.

In a meeting held on 18 February 2009, both parties cleared up misconceptions that management was going to unilaterally implement a number of measures aimed at managing costs.

10 February 2009  PUBLIC NOTICE - Used Rails

There have been various emails and letters circulated locally and internationally regarding the availability of used rails. The originator of these messages intimates that the rails have been obtained from Transnet Freight Rail.

Whilst it has not been possible to trace the person or persons sending these messages Transnet Freight Rail wishes to announce that these messages are totally without substance and are untrue. Transnet Freight Rail only disposes of used rails and other scrap in terms of its official procurement policy.
