Granite
About 600 000 to 800 000 tons of South African granite is conveyed annually from quarries in Rustenburg, Potgietersrus, Belfast and Springbok to Durban, Cape Town and Richards Bay for export to the Far East and Europe.
Our Service
We focus on optimising supply chains in the granite industry, by providing integrated logistics solutions, consisting of Transnet Freight Rail-owned and subcontracted activities beyond rail. The advantages to customers include:
- The elimination of inefficiencies,
- Capacity for inventory management throughout the supply chain and
- Reduced supply chain costs in real terms.
Most of our business is conducted in dedicated trainloads in bulk form, transporting commodities from stockpile to stockpile. Our customised wagons have been designed to satisfy the special needs of particular industries, to limit damage, spillage and contamination.
Commodities
The bulk of South African granite, about 86%, is exported. Factors that affect the granite market are:
- Price,
- the size of the blocks and
- the colour of the granite.
A small percentage of Southern African export granite is quarried in Zimbabwe. Zimbabwean granite is darker than the Rustenburg material and has a finer texture. This granite has a higher value than the Rustenburg granite, which is also black but with a much coarser texture.
South Africa's Rustenburg material forms the basis of our exports and is a standard globally.
Our customers
Some of our major customers in this sector include:
- Marlin Granite,
- RED Graniti and
- Eagle Granite.
