Fertiliser

The South African fertiliser industry is stable and in a mature stage of its life cycle. It is a key input in the grain industry in South Africa as well as neighbouring SADC countries.

The industry value to the SA economy is estimated at about R20 billion per year, contributing about 2% to the country's GDP. The industry is a major earner of foreign exchange for the country - R2,1 billion annually.

Transnet Freight Rail enjoys a market share of 78.27%, with road at 21.73% of the transportable volumes.

We offer a high degree of flexibility to this industry, particularly the ability to customise wagons, which enables us to satisfy widely varying customer demands. Our capacity to move large volumes, in excess of 4 000 tons per dedicated train-load, benefit customers in terms of cost-efficiency and speed of delivery.

Our Service

Our services have been designed to match specific types of freight according to parcel size and frequency.

  1. A megaRAIL service which accounts for 68% of the total volume. These are the dedicated rock phosphate trains from Phalaborwa to Richards bay on a daily basis.
    • Phalaborwa - Richardsbay : phoshate rock
    • Phalaborwa - Potchefstroom : phosphate rock
    • Phalaborwa - Phokeng : phosphate rock
  2. A flexiRAIL service, which accounts for 9% of volume. This takes the form of imported fertiliser related products that run on the Natcor, Richards bay and Cape Town lines. One example is 95% of the Sulphur that is imported into the country through Richards Bay.
  3. An accessRAIL service which accounts for 23% of total volume. These are consignment loads transported on mixed general trains for local and over border markets.
