Our primary customers are the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) in the automotive industry, as well as the main vehicle distribution/ferry companies. The portfolio's activities are directed by the inbound and outbound logistics requirements of its customers.
Our service
Our expertise and specialised rolling stock provide the foundation for effective service provision for high value goods conveyed in the industry. We are able to offer economies of scale benefits that rail only can provide.
Our specialised car wagons, the SCL type and the SCJ-8 wagon, are particularly suited to the safe and secure conveyance of high-risk, high-value freight; and are ideally suited to the delivery times demanded. In addition, an optional insurance service offers "peace of mind" value to customers.
Completely Knocked Down Parts (CKD) are moved in containers, and Completely Built Up (CBU) units get moved in specialised car wagons. Our logistics solutions are directed at eventually managing the entire supply chain, taking ownership of the vehicle from the production line to delivery at the dealership. We convey imported CKDs and CBUs, as well as exported CBUs, using major corridors that serve the ports of Durban, Port Elizabeth and Cape Town.
The core benefit of our service is the predictability provided by running dedicated trains, which translates into cost-efficient transportation.

Spoornet's contracts in this industry include:
- BMW's export/import cargo on the Natal corridor,
- BMW's CKD cargo from Cape Town to Pretoria,
- GMSA and VWSA retail units between Port Elizabeth and Gauteng,
- Ford Group and Toyota's retail units on the Natal Corridor,
- Ford Group's CKD cargo between Port Elizabeth and Pretoria and
- Nissan's CKD cargo from Durban and PE to Gauteng.
